Until today, the only mention of the impending continuation of the sales tax disaster was the ballot published in the Ad Vertiser last week. Nobody from Pole Dancer's On Main felt it was a worthwhile story until now, a week before the election.
Now, it's a hot button issue. The city is broke and the council, led by the flip-flop, myopic ex-business teacher Dudley Davidson, implore on our sensibilities to renew this playground of taxes.
"We're in a position where if we were to lose $4 million out of our budget, we'd be in worse shape than we are now," Davidson said." You got here on your own Dudley. You backed up to the Doug Worden/Bruce Slagle/Bill Ell trough. You have publicly stated how profoundly lucky we all were to have a such wonderful leaders. With all that back slapping you missed the money running out city hall's door like crap running through Knoke Sewer into downtown Burlington.
Two squad cars, $110,000?? Are these people insane?
Unknown city engineering - $50,000
Bee's Stadium - $50,000
Computer equipment - $50,000
Anyone see a pattern here? Expenditures on 3 items are exactly $50,000?
Street equipment - $120,000 - lease it
Parking ramp resealing - $31,400 - forget it, the police dept is moving
You can tax me until I'm dead, but you're still broke. No 1% tax is going to fix anything until you get the expenses under control. And it starts with the city and county employees paying 15-20% of their health care premium.
Give my regards to Broadway
Remember me to Herald Square
Tell all the folks in Burlington that Broadway's commin' there
The farts as art crowd is going to save downtown Burlington. An art deco facade that should been felled decades ago will cause a renaissance in a run down river town.
40 years ago, two blocks of Jefferson St. being filled in with gazebos was the answer to Westland Mall. That really saved downtown Burlington. Ditto riverboat gambling.
Burlington can not meet a payroll. Bridges are closed for fear of collapse. Windows fall onto the side walks downtown from buildings that should be torn down. Nobody enforces the building codes. There is no money to repair, replace, nor remove public safety hazards. We do have priorities.
We now pour public money into a gaudy facade theater to save Downtown Burlington.
Pass the popcorn. Applause, applause, when the next building collapses into the streets.
Democrats Backpedal as China Readies $15.1 Billion Canadian Oil Deal
Can't Happen Here
"When President Barack Obama blocked the Keystone Pipeline, Republicans said the move would encourage Canada to pursue oil deals with China instead of the United States and cede a massive chunk of North American oil assets to the communist nation.
Condemned to Another Four Year Iowa Senate Sentence
"Last week, I documented how pathetic the Iowa Senate fundraising was when the two Senate Republican leaders posted a combined $95,000 in the bank. It’s actually even worse than what I originally reported."
This does not look good. Is any outside help coming to rid us of Comrade State Senator Courtney?
Obama has no concept of hard work to earn a living because he’s more than likely a product of the American taxpayer through all the minority help systems installed in America for their benefit. He was able to work the system because he was part black and qualified for the numerous educational opportunities that exist to push them through the higher education system. Of course he doesn’t publish any of his past educational accomplishments because it obviously isn’t really much to brag about or he for sure would be telling us all about his education since he has an ego the size of New York.
Obama probably didn’t have to work hard because there are always liberal leaders on hand to make sure they make it through regardless of grades or accomplishments. If the people really knew the truth about Obama he would probably be working as a union man for General Motors or Planned Parenthood rather than messing up our country.
He’s the only man in history to get a Nobel Prize for doing absolutely nothing, it was just a gift from an organization that even gave one to Al Gore for wasting energy on himself while harping that everyone else should turn green. In some ways the Nobel Prize has become a political tool to further careers and agenda’s the Prize deems important to them, both Gore and Obama prove it.
Obama couldn’t run a business himself otherwise he wouldn’t be working for government his entire life and his wife wouldn’t have had a $300,000 stay at home phony job at that hospital in Chicago. Even his house was somewhat of a gift from one of Chicago’s shady people Antoin "Tony" Rezko:
How can such a man have the nerve to tell people their hard work to make a business successful is the product of someone else. He should tell that to his or her family that have probably gone months or years only seeing their spouse or parent at bedtime or holidays if that much.
Obama got where he is now through deception and the ability to give teleprompter scripted speeches where without the teleprompter he normally fails at speech making. Just remember the axis leaders of WWII were all deceptive people when they gained the public’s acceptance and rose to leadership.
“USDA and the government of Mexico have entered into a partnership to help educate eligible Mexican nationals living in the United States about available nutrition assistance,” the USDA explains in a brief paragraph on their “Reaching Low-Income Hispanics With Nutrition Assistance” web page. “Mexico will help disseminate this information through its embassy and network of approximately 50 consular offices.”
The U. S. Department of Agriculture, headed by former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack (D), is working with the government of Mexico. This cooperative effort is to put more Mexican nationals in our country on food stamps.
“USDA does not perform outreach to immigrants that are undocumented, and therefore not eligible for SNAP.”
Will the Mexican consulates strive to see illegal aliens are not encouraged to receive welfare food stamps American taxpayers are providing? Will the party of Obama, Vilsack and Courtney demand that I. D. not be required when registering to vote and casting a ballot?
Obama‘s Jobs Council Hasn’t Met in Six Months - Cabinet Once!
"...remember all those times we were told President Obama was focused like a laser (or something) on jobs? Yeah, we remember that too. Say, it must be awfully difficult to address the nation’s unemployment when, you know, your jobs council hasn’t met in six months.
Hypocrisy: Reid, Pelosi, Wasserman Schultz Refuse to Release Tax Returns
3 Biggest Scum Bag Losers Skirt Review
"House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), have been some of the most vocal voices to have called on Mitt Romney to release his tax returns.
"How much would a weekend trip skiing trip to Aspen, Colorado, cost you? If you’re Michelle Obama and her two daughters, would you believe over $83,000?
Believe it. Over President’s Day weekend in February of this year, Michelle took her two daughters skiing in Aspen -- and the cost was $83,182.99.
You heard that correctly. $83,182.99.
Among the costs were:
* U.S. Secret Service, including accommodations at the Fasching Haus deluxe condominium and the Inn at Aspen: $48,950.38.
* Cost for the flight, per official DOD published hourly rates: $22,583.70.
* Food and miscellaneous items on the flight: $235.44.
* Rental cars: $6,442.23.
By the way, this was the 16th vacation in three years for the Obamas. You think you’re overworked? Try their travel agent.
Then again, this was chump change for the Obamas. Remember how much it cost when Michelle Obama vacationed in Spain in August 2010? $467,585.
Or her June 2011 trip to South Africa and Botswana? $424,142."
How in the world did it qualify for that kind of tax dollar windfall without any kind of track record?
Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., and Gov. Brian Sandoval were among the political leaders who lauded the company when it announced it would start making solar cells in the Golden Triangle Industrial Park.
And naturally, Obama has his fingerprints all over it:
The Amonix solar manufacturing plant in North Las Vegas, heavily financed under an Obama administration energy initiative, has closed its 214,000-square-foot facility 14 months after it opened.
Officials at Amonix headquarters in Seal Beach, Calif., have not responded to repeated calls for comment this week. The company today began selling equipment, from automated tooling systems to robotic welding cells.
A designer and manufacturer of concentrated photovoltaic solar power systems, Amonix received $6 million in federal tax credits and a $15.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to build the plant in North Las Vegas.
And here is the likely reason why Obama had to rush in where venture capitalists feared to tread:
"I don't think they had a lot of training," Kenerly said. "There were a lot of quality issues. A lot of stuff was coming back because it had some functionality issues.""
How do you think Courtney, Hoschek, Diewold, Edwards and the rest of the local Democrats that slither through the election cycle get elected? They go to all the nursing homes with absentee ballots, have the resident "sign here and I can mail that for you" routine.
Ask Courtney if he has any absentee ballots with him for the residents to sign and mail/deliver to the court house. No, it doesn't matter that the election is 4 months away and there are no ballots. I'll bet gasoline for Courtney's new Corvette to cruise Aspen Grove Cemetery looking for voters in this heat is astronomical. The little nit has to stay cool.
Besides, following the letter of the law never stopped Courtney before.
After DreamWorks Animation suffered a $125 million loss on the tradionally-animated Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, the studio switched to all computer-generated animation. Since then, DreamWorks' animated films have consistently been successful.
...It must be the trend, because Disney's Pixar Studios outsources its animation work to the Philippines:
Pixar, the American film studio that outsourced this work to the Philippines, is just one of many global companies to have taken advantage of the island nation’s thriving business process outsourcing (BPO) industry—contracting out work related to back office operations for cost savings.
...It is also a key generator of new jobs in the Philippines, creating work for more than 638,000 employees in 2012. That figure is estimated to grow to 1.3 million by 2016, according to the Business Processing Association of the Philippines. Most of these jobs are currently located in Manila, but an estimated 150,000 jobs are located in other so-called “next wave cities” such as Cebu."
“This president will say or do anything to keep the highest office in the land, even if it means demeaning the highest office in the land,” Gillespie said.
On CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) echoed that charge. “This is not the 2008 Barack Obama we thought we were getting,” said Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman and a potential Republican candidate for vice president. “This is not the candidate of hope and change.”
Rather, he said, “This is a candidate who is hoping to change the subject by attacking his opponent with attacks that have already been labeled by independent fact checkers as deceitful and untrue.”
Including the most liberal MSM New York Times and The Washington Post.
Top Ten Felons, Fugitives, and Shady Characters in Obama's Life
The barn door opened and a pony riding criminals rode out. A worthy recap of Obama's inner circle and advisers.
"Now that the increasingly erratic and desperately sleazy Obama campaign has decided to cavalierly throw around the word "felony" when it comes to pushing a campaign of lies surrounding Mitt Romney and Bain Capital, this seems like a good time to jump in the wayback machine for a look at the actual convicted felons, criminals, and dubious characters who have always been associated with Barack Obama's political life.
What? What's that? You don’t want to talk about this?
President Obama: ‘If You’ve Got a Business — You Didn’t Build That. Somebody Else Made That Happen’
The Question Remains Is How Did Obama Get 'There'?
Answer: Pandering To The Entitlement Crowd
"The official transcript relates:
There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
How Long before They Come Knocking on Washington Street?
"Law enforcement officials said Thursday that they have an open criminal investigation regarding allegations of misconduct in the city government of San Bernardino, which announced this week it was going to file for bankruptcy."
Citizens of San Bernadino, CA thought their city solvent. Suddenly, out of the blue, bankruptcy. A criminal investigation has been opened.
Citizens of Burlington thought their city solvent. A new City Manager looked at the books and went to the bank to meet payroll.
Has a criminal investigation been opened yet in Burlington?
California is known for being at the fore of trends. California as a welfare paradise is coming to a conclusion. The State of California is a debt disaster. California cities are declaring bankruptcy.
"Meanwhile, San Bernardino is likely to be scrutinized over how it managed to come to the brink of disaster, seemingly so quickly. City Atty. James Penman said budget figures submitted to the council had been fabricated for 16 years. Interim City Manager Andrea Miller was less harsh, saying the city's budget was erroneously said to be balanced for the last two years."
The only difference between California's sick cities and Burlington is the weather. Burlington teeters on the brink of bankruptcy. That fact was kept hidden.
Will Burlington pull back from the abyss, or keep supporting an empty lot Manor Mall, a run down theater, a wrecked - plex, a casino swimming pool, etc.? To be, or not to be. Disillusion, or bankruptcy?
"Despite the fact that Congressman Loebsack has represented a majority of the new 2nd District his measures of incumbency are low. In addition, his position on the ballot is below 50% and more than a third of Iowa voters are unsure about whether they approve of Loebsack’s performance in office. Only a third (33%) would re-elect him today, while (38%) of voters indicate they think it’s time to give a ‘new person’ a chance. At 48%, Loebsack is merely 5 points ahead of Archer on the ballot (the margin of error for the survey)."
It’s quite obvious how Harkin obtained his family income, by insider trading, unavailable to the general public that the congress had worked out for itself over the past decades. Harkin, to the best of my knowledge obtained his millions while supposedly representing the people of Iowa although it appears by his wealth that he was doing plenty to line his own pockets since a senator only earns $174,000 a year. I’m sure his wife was given the heads up by Tom when important insider trading information was passed around the senate; so her investments were always a sure thing.
When he leaves office, the sooner the better, he can run to his island mansion and forget about Iowa and how he obtained his millions while in public service. He spent his working life feeding at the government trough and will walk away very wealthy and I wonder how many other Iowans can say the same. I wonder who’s best interest he was looking out for while in Washington all these years?
Limousine liberal Senator Tom Harkin is the richest in Iowa's congressional delegation. Does Tom Harkin suffer a guilt complex?
Big time tax and spend Tom Harkin claims he does it all to help the little people of Iowa. Tax 'em Tom loves to assuage any guilt about economic inequity with other peoples gold. To do so is all so liberal.
There is nothing wrong with being rich. What riles is our senator's hypocrisy of gaining political power and wealth off advocating eating the rich.
Harkin the hypocrite needs to take a hit when his name is next on the ballot.
"On a more noble plane, however, one could say The Hawk Eye seeks to steer public opinion along in search of progress and justice. It's not always a pretty sight. The truth is never cut and dry, black and white and laying there to pick up. Though we try to do it as politely as possible, to achieve our goal, we are perceived by some as arrogant, belligerent and not very nice."
Unlike the Hawk-Eye, the Advertiser will spike whatever truth damages their agenda.
Older residents remember when Burlington took pride in the Hawk-Eye. For those too young, or not living here for long before the ascent of Delaney and Allison, check out the library's files. Burlington once had strong, vibrant news source on paper. The Advertiser it has become should soon be laid to rest.
So every dividend check paid to the investors of Great River has come from the hands of Des Moines County taxpayers.
"Big River Resources consists of four ethanol plants and five grain elevators. The ethanol facilities are located in West Burlington, Dyersville, Galva, Ill., and the Boyceville, Wis. plant, which the company purchased in December 2011.
"We are managing to make a little profit," Defenbaugh said. "The margins are different at all four plants." Diffenbaugh says profit margins are going to open back up. How? Manipulating the market by controlling production like the oil cartels?
And not one drop of this would be possible without the higher taxes paid by the Des Moines County taxpayers. Did Dennis Hinkle bother to place any taxpayer safeguards into the contracts? No.
Has anyone ever been invited to a Taxpayer Appreciation Picnic courtesy of Great River? The least we deserve is a wiener for the wiener we got.
Were Tim Hoscheck and Brian Tapp charged with covering up their criminal role in falsifying the state documents?
Why not? There is no newspaper with the guts to run the story of Democrats gone wild.
I’ve come to the conclusion one of the major problems with Burlington and Iowa for that matter is not only because of liberalism (democrats) but the people appointed or elected to the numerous boards such as the water board, board of supervisors, cemetery board, school board and all appointed or elected boards.
Here in Burlington the people on public boards are always in the ranks of the high brow crowd and most if not all of them just cycle from one board to another setting policies that favor the wealthy while not representing anyone who must work for a meager living in this one horse town.
If this were not true why would the water bill increase from a mere $75 dollars in the early '90’s to over $171 today with nothing but reductions in service and quality? Draw out a glass of water today leave it sit until tomorrow and then taste it and if you can stand the taste you’ll probably drink just about anything.
Take the board of supervisors who hold their meetings during working hours where the common man can’t go and there’s probably a reason for this morning meeting schedule, to keep the common wage earning out of the local decision process leaving the rich and old money crowd in control of everything decided by the board.
In Burlington these “board people” jump from one board to another and imposes nothing but the same dead end thinking process that’s corrupted and ruined our local elected officials leaving Burlington broke and incapable of meeting the payroll.
Of course all these “board people” and elected dimwits have plenty of money of their own to waste; so it doesn’t bother them to constantly up the taxes and fees to make up for their poor thought processes nor does it affect them like it does those on Social Security or other fixed income people.
For me the increase per year on the public provided services amounts to over $40.00 per year and what do I receive in return? The services have been reduced and the fees increased; so it doesn’t buy me one dime in quality or service improvements.
To me this means the city management and employees are now the very cancer that is killing the American way of life through their union imposed welfare state coupled with the democratic form of liberal government who have sold out the taxpayer for the government unions and their demands in exchange for their votes and money which has now made government unions and management the “privileged class” at the expense of the taxpayer.
Actually, one could probably lump both city boards and government unions in the same package. The quality of the boards never changes with the same people just moving from one board to another since they always nominate each other for this or that board for no other reason than cronyism. The unions always get what they want because they sit on both sides of the bargaining table posing a no win situation for the taxpayer and constant failure in just about all they attempt.
Why the people of Burlington think the one party system is good should take a look around at where the economy is booming and you’ll surly find no democrats in control. Burlington is living proof of democratic failure on a constant basis and it’s been going on for years now with no improvement in sight just like the Obama administration’s failure to end the recession.
The LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate) scandal is a big deal, and so far no one knows just how deep the ruse ran. Put simply, the LIBOR rate is the rate at which banks get funds from other banks. The scandal: Barclays—and potentially other banks—allegedly tried to rig the rate. So far, Barclays has paid $455 million in fines to U.S. and U.K. regulators.
"The LIBOR benchmark rates that are tied to an estimated $800 trillion of securities, the offending banks essentially played with matches in the middle of the world's largest house of leveraged cards. The combined gross domestic product of all the nations of the world is only about $70 trillion, so the towering mountain of LIBOR-connected securities out there climbs into the realm of leveraged derivatives like those that nearly brought the global financial system to its knees at the height of the 2008 credit crisis."
...the Motley Fool financial blog ominously observed today: “If a dozen or more banks can collectively manipulate something as central to the everyday functioning of our economic system as LIBOR, and in the process play games with an $800 trillion mountain of leveraged securities, is there any corner of our financial markets that can be deemed safe from such reckless and deceptive behavior?”"
The Blair House will be hosting a fundraiser for Sen. Tom Courtney on July 16 at 2 PM in their activity room. Seeing that Mr. Courtney never shows up at any other meetings to address the concerns of the taxpayers I think we need to show up at Mr. Courtney's fundraiser.
It says Sen. Courtney will share his thoughts and issues and concerns of Iowans who live and work in the long care settings. Those attending will have an opportunity to share their interests and concerns. All I believe the taxpayers have a lot of interests and concerns with Mr. Courtney and I believe we should be there to have them address these concerns. The last time he was scheduled to be there and the people knew about it it somehow got canceled. He probably is out there looking for votes.
And as far as our police chief retiring is no wonder he has a smile on his face is probably laughing all the way to the bank. He was just another crook from City Hall. Maybe the new police chief will have a different view on the crime in Burlington.
And the raise that Jane Evans got should be taken back and, if she and the Burlington teachers can’t get the Burlington schools elevated from the bottom academic state list in two years, she should be replaced.
If anybody knows maybe they can tell me if Jim Davidson taught business in the school system. If this is an example of the people teaching our children we have a big problem. I know Mr. Davidson must take better care of his money or he would be down signing up for food stamps. Maybe his wife handles the money.
Can anyone tell me how many employees does grow greater Burlington have?
"But as citizens we should be grateful. Given the administration's extravagant ambitions, incompetence is its saving grace."
"This is what makes so egregious the Obama claim that Arizona is impermissibly undermining federal law. "To say, as the court does," writes Scalia regarding those parts of the law struck down by the majority, "that Arizona contradicts federal law by enforcing applications of the Immigration Act that the president declines to enforce boggles the mind."
Consider this breathtaking cascade: An administration violates its constitutional duty to execute the law by deliberately refusing to enforce it. It then characterizes its non-enforcement as simply establishing priorities. It then tries to strike down a state law on immigration on the grounds that it contradicts federal law — by actually trying to enforce it!
The logic is circular, oxymoronic and the very definition of executive overreach. During the Bush-43 years, we were repeatedly treated to garment-rending about the imperial presidency, to major hyperventilation about the "unitary executive." Yet the current administration's imperiousness has earned little comparable attention.
Perhaps because President Obama has been so ineffective. It's hard to call someone imperial who's failed so consistently. Or maybe not. You can surely be imperial and unsuccessful. Waterloo comes to mind."
Obama Admin Gave $98.5 Million to Alternative Energy Company Now Going Belly-Up
Illustration of Obama's Lack of Business Skill Set
"The Obama campaign unveiled a new “Betting on America” slogan today, but there is increasing evidence that all his administration has done is bet on cronyism.
The Obama administration made a disastrous, reckless, and failed bet on the green energy company Solyndra.
And now, according to a report by the Washington Times, a geothermal energy company to whom the Obama administration gave a $98.5 million loan guarantee is in serious financial trouble and the “company’s auditors have questioned whether it can stay in business.”
Nevada Geothermal Power (NGP) “has substantial debts and does not generate enough cash from its current operations after debt-service costs,” according to an internal audit seen by the Times.
“The company’s ability to continue as a going concern is dependent on its available cash and its ability to continue to raise funds to support corporate operations and the development of other properties,” NGP auditors said, according to the Times."
Senator Grassley Reveals Damaging Fast & Furious Memo
"On February 2, Senator Grassley’s investigators talked to Agent Gary Styers about his knowledge of Operation Fast & Furious. The following day Agent Styers sent out a memo about this conversation and it quickly spread through the ATF. However, on February 4, Assistant Attorney General Ron Weich sent a letter to Senator Grassley claiming guns were not allowed to walk. They had to withdraw the letter in the fall because it was a “false letter."
Home Burglary Recent Addition to Burlington's Crime Wave
What Crime Wave? from the City Council: "We're Broke"
Friday night one or more burglars entered a home in the 500 block of North Sixth street while the home owners were sleeping and ripped off a computer along with ransacking the wife’s automobile after finding her keys, funny they didn’t steal the car.
This just goes to show that Burlington is basically as unsafe as most major cities having population’s much higher than Burlington’s. There is no safe haven to be found no matter what location of Burlington a person lives in. Our city is beginning to look and act like its sister city East St. Louis more every day, sort of like twins now.
Indeed, Senator Patrick Leahy (Vt., D.) , the chair of the Judiciary Committee, suddenly took to the floor on May 14 and directly addressed Roberts, urging him in harshly partisan tones to uphold Obamacare and maintain “the proper role of the judicial branch.”
Stewart Baker, a partner at the Washington law firm Steptoe & Johnson, writes at the Volokh Conspiracy that he found the whole campaign against Roberts weird and unusual, given that the justices’ conference vote on Obamacare had been held six weeks earlier. Why “would the chair of the Judiciary Committee risk the appearance of trying to harshly strongarm the Court when his remarks wouldn’t make the slightest difference?” he asks. “The Leahy speech reads like it was written for an audience of one. It offers flattery and it offers threats, all of them personalized to appeal to Chief Justice Roberts alone.”
When Religion Gets in The Way of Justice - Parallel to Satan Scheffler?
Judge Goes Absolutely Berserk and Berates Local Repugnant Pastor During Divorce Hearing
"He's My Chauffeur!"
The self-righteous, religious, pompous, spud nut that thinks he is smarter than the court. Shades of the future court hearing when Satan Steve Scheffler has to account for excessive laundry fees.
"If you have the volume on your computer turned up, turn it down. And you might want to put some earplugs in.
What you’re about to hear is a local family court judge in Winfield, WV, absolutely lose his mind during a divorce hearing involving a local pastor. The judge, William M. “Chip” Watkins III, was accusing Rev. Arthur D. Hage of talking to the media after a previous hearing. That conversation, he believed, led to an article about the judge and his wife that apparently included a picture of his house and information about his residence. So when Hage showed up for another hearing, Judge Watkins was irate. And he let loose, threatening to incarcerate Hage for life."
