Obama's leading-from-behind reaction to Romney's visit reaffirmed Clint Eastwood's empty chair analogy, which upset the mainstream media, the iconic actor used Thursday night at the Republican National Convention when discussing Obama and his presidency.
"The empty-chair analogy by Clint Eastwood might be far more accurate and impactful than the Obama campaign and its cheerleaders in the media care to accept," the insightful Republican strategist Cheri Jacobus wrote.
Iowa GOP Sparks Rules Change to Stop Stupid Scheffler Tricks
22 of Iowa GOP Delegation Miserable Failures
Fall Out to Continue Until Hell Freezes Over
"Spiker, Scheffler, and other Ron Paul supporters are livid about these rule changes, but had they shown some respect to the 120,000 people who voted in the caucuses, the first rule change wouldn’t be necessary, and its backers would have found it difficult to find support for it within the rules committee.
Chairman Spiker has been outspoken during the rules committee meeting this week.
Had Spiker, Scheffler, and the others been concerned about defending Iowa’s First in the Nation status, Drew Ivers and the throng of Paul supporters who surrounded him wouldn’t have awarded Ron Paul 22 of Iowa’s 28 delegates during the roll call of states. I’m sure that Ivers and his cohorts feel like they really accomplished something, but for the life of me, I don’t know what it is. If anything, Ron Paul’s Iowa organizers proved that Iowa’s system contained flaws which needed to be addressed."
Hey, how's this workin' out for you now Satan? And your 22 pay-as-you-go delegates? Happy they paid your way to a late bus ride? Twice?
“[Brain Breaks] takes just a couple of minutes and makes the kids pay attention and focus for a higher level of learning and be more engaged with what is going on,” said Kathy Sadler-Bargo, a fifth-grade teacher at Wood Elementary, 1930 Lakeside Drive."
Should short breaks be implemented at Burlington City Council meetings?
Now we have the State Department complaining that using American common phrases could be offensive. Well, to me it's the state department that is offensive to Americans coming out with this politically correct crap that is meaningless and petty. Why would a state department official have time to worry about common American phrases when they should be worried about the world wide mess we've been in for the duration of this current administration. If they want to control their employees tell them not to use common phrases when speaking around foreigners but lay off telling the public not to speak freely in America.
I would think things of state would be their expertise and not American phrases that have been around for eons or longer. The only thing Americans need worry about is government that wants to control every aspect of American life similar to the old USSRR and the Nazis. For those not aware of the horrible use of phrases please check out this site: State Department: 'Hold down the fort,' other common phrases could be offensive
Personally, I would think pictures of men kissing men or women kissing other women would be more offensive to Indians which is basically not an Indian trait; so why is this seen on American television and shown to school children who may not understand that it's not considered normal behavior by most Americans with the exception of the left wing zealots who control the press and the current administration.
The world is beginning to think America is a country of idiots because of the things we worry about that are meaningless and outright stupid. Our children aren't even being taught the 3 R's but in California students are about to learn all about the gay lifestyle through force in the form of leftist controlled government schools.
The below paragraph tell us what the leftist hunger for in America and you better believe it because they have the current administration behind them pushing such things as the state department phrases crap.
The Leftist hunger for change to the society that they hate leads to a hunger for control over other people. And they will do and say anything to get that control: "Power at any price". Leftist politicians are mostly self-aggrandizing crooks who gain power by deceiving the uninformed with snake-oil promises -- power which they invariably use to destroy. Destruction is all that they are good at. Destruction is what haters do.
Rants from Dale Alison are sadly prophetic of the imminent demise of the Ad Vertiser. Dale chants the usual talking points.
The “stimulus was passed.” $800 billion shoveled out the door into thin air. The Democrats had unilateral control of the triad for two years but failed to do anything of substance to repair the economy or create jobs.
“Grand Bargain…the Republicans walked away.” As well they should have from a dictatorial concession of higher taxes for the 2% that create the jobs in this country. Dale, you surely realize government jobs do nothing but add to the debt load, don’t you?
The Grandaddy of Dale’s euphoric lunacy is found in this Democratic Party talking point:
“Republicans have spent the last four years complaining about all the liberties and freedoms they've been forced to give up, yet can't name a one.”
If you seriously believe American citizens are not being denied their Constitutional rights every time the Emperor scribes another Executive Order that circumvents Congress, you really need help.
As for Dale’s impression that the private sector is doing all right, how come your newspaper is getting thinner and thinner each week of its existence?
Families of Fallen SEALs Allegedly Sent Form Letters With President's Electronic Signature
Late for Tee Time, Obama Sends Form Letters For Fallen Seals
"Thirty U.S. service members were killed on August 6, 2011, when a CH-47 Chinook was shot down in Afghanistan’s Wardak province. As Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft reminds us, it is the deadliest single loss of U.S. forces in the Afghanistan campaign.
“Yesterday, Karen and Billy Vaughn, parents of Aaron Carson Vaughn, spoke at the Defending the Defenders forum sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots outside the RNC Convention in Tampa. Karen brought a copy of the form letter they were sent following their son’s death,” Hoft reports."
$20,000 One Hell of a Price to Sit in the Republican Convention's Cheap Seats
"Enter Steve Sheffler, head of Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition and Republican National Committeeman. During the course of this year’s Iowa caucus process, he walked into my mother’s office. He gave the same pitch and asked for 20k. My mom was a little hesitant. He then said that “she would make a great delegate to the national convention.”
Thanks, Spike, for the Republican National Convention seating chart. It maybe closer to heaven, but $20,000 to sit in the nose bleed section is no bargain. How does Satan fool people into paying him that kind of money?
Satan Steve Scheffler' Bus Never Shows - Is Twice a Coincidence?
Shuttle bus troubles leave Iowa GOP delegates bleary-eyed today
As You Sow So Shall You Reap
Jiminy Crickets Get Stepped On
"Iowa’s delegates were dragging this morning after only three or four hours of sleep thanks to delays in the buses that shuttled them between their distant island hotel and the Republican National Convention.
“We could’ve gone to the airport, gone through TSA and made it back to Des Moines faster,” said state Rep. Glen Massie, one of Iowa’s 28 delegates. “We could’ve flown halfway across the United States in the time it took us to go 30 miles.”
Although they were finished at Tuesday’s session at 11 p.m., some of the Iowans didn’t get back to their hotel an hour’s journey away until as late as 2:30 a.m., they said.
...“No bus was ever scheduled for us,” said alternate delegate Chelsy Askren of Clayton County.
“By accident or design,” added Massie. “You know how we voted.”
Steve Scheffler said, "“This was just a disaster."
The way I see it, you got screwed for screwing the Iowa Republicans that never bought into your stupid Bull Shi*. Now you know how it feels to be a hooker that got stiffed by a pandering fool.
"State Sen. Thomas Courtney weighed in on the issue complimenting the unions willingness to work with the city."
The City of Burlington is broke and needs wage concessions from City workers. The City of Burlington is broke because of dumb decisions. Burlington's City government has been aided and abetted in the pursuit of stupid.
The "without merit" lawsuit against the "Burlington and Missouri River Railroad" cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. This dumb decision was reached at a secret meeting that was not supposed to be secret. The public was barred, but it was reported State Senator Courtney was present. What did our State Senator Courtney say? One can easily imagine.
The empty lot Manor Mall is truly the City of Burlington's epitome of stupidity. A public enraged at abuse of eminent domain as economic development and the disasters so spawned demanded an end. The Iowa Legislature was forced into special session to pass legislation reigning in the abuse. A rider came out of the Iowa Senate exempting Burlington's Manor Mall.
Thank you for throwing low-income families out of their homes. Thank you for saddling the City of Burlington with over $6 million of debt to pay for. Thank you for all you have done for us and our future.
Dumb decisions cost us all. As the City of Burlington begs at the bank door to meet payroll obligations, concessions must be made.
Make a wise decision on Election Day. Make Senator Courtney go away.
Pravda On Main - Brain Washing or Desperation Marketing?
I see where the Hack Eye is out promoting to the students, through the teachers to get the Hack Eye in the classrooms in order to enlighten students more into the false premise of liberalism. From a local news perspective it's still left leaning but the editorial pages are nothing more than an outright leftist propaganda platform. It's bad enough the teacher unions are leftist without the students being blindsided and missing the chance of reading unbiased information about current events and history.
Having the Hack Eye editorial pages in the schools is nothing more than repeating history of that done in Germany prior to WWII. Remember politics is the only thing Leftists know about. They know nothing of economics, history or business. Their only expertise is in promoting feelings of grievance and I see no reason to promote this in our failing school system here in Burlington. The current administration in Washington is living proof that this paragraph is the truth.
Here's a good quote by Ann Coulter concerning liberals: "With their infernal racial set-asides, racial quotas, and race norming, liberals share many of the Klan's premises. The Klan sees the world in terms of race and ethnicity. So do liberals! Indeed, liberals and white supremacists are the only people left in America who are neurotically obsessed with race. Conservatives champion a color-blind society."
"The Republican National Convention seating chart, obtained by POLITICO Sunday, shows the delegations from Nevada, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota and Oklahoma all located on the outer fringe of the convention floor. Each are states with significant Paul followings.
The delegation for the Northern Mariana Islands, on the other hand, is right in front behind the gang from Michigan, birth state of Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Other groups with pretty good seats include those from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and American Samoa. None has electoral votes that can impact the outcome of the election.
It’s yet another indignity for the party’s cantankerous libertarian faction for their revered retiring Rep. Paul, R-Texas, who accumulated 177 delegates during his run for the GOP nomination this year. While he didn’t win a single state, his supporters used procedural mechanisms available to them in several states to take a majority of delegates from Nevada, Iowa and Minnesota.
It is customary for vanquished candidates to cede delegates to the presumptive nominee, but Paul has insisted he cannot tell his followers what to do."
I'm surprised the bus even showed up. These events sure illustrate the evil of buying influence will get you, even if you are Satan and his paid flock.
So I propose turning the lot into a cornfield. Think of all the benefits the locals would reap. We would all get something out of this investment, Sweet corn in the fall and after the harvest a beautiful view of the empty K-mart.
Senator Courtney says he is the little man’s friend, but this is a lie. Just look at what the manor mall is costing us all. Voters for Courtney are dull, dumb and dysfunctional.
This fall is our chance at redemption. Vote Brad Borne in November.
It's tax time again in Des Moines County. My taxes went up and I'm sure yours did.
Maybe the people who live in the county might want to find out from their county supervisors were the tax relief from the estate of Dewey Byar went to and just how much Two River's Bank realized from the properties they sold.
I would also like to know how John Mercer received 1.2 acres for $100 for which he pays $13 dollars in taxes. It looks to me that the bank if some people some pretty good deals on the land.
Now if you want to talk to somebody at the bank don't ask for the president Kent Gaudian because he don't want to talk to anybody about it.
The tax records of the county are public records and should be available on request. Here are two parcels 11 -- 31 -- 151 – 037& 11 -- 31 -- 151 -- 038 that belong to Fun City and Winegard Antenna which show no assessments or taxes. I wonder why that would be Fun City no tax information on it. Fun City is still making yearly payments on the loan that are learned city council got us into.
I have a list of all properties of the upper class in Burlington who don't seem to be paying their fair share. The assessors office should get off their dead asses and start doing some checking. There are elderly people in this town having to scrape by to pay their taxes while some businesses and property owners get by whatever they want. There's no need to go to the newspaper with this because it would be a waste of time.
I have hired two people to check into the counties and cities dealings. Hard telling what they'll find. Will let you know.
In Sunday’s Hack Eye Mike writes a rather lengthy editorial basically concerning global warming and after about seventeen paragraphs of his spew he finally gets to his real agenda and that’s blaming the Tea Party for state officials less than catastrophic language when bringing up the problem about what nature may have or have not in store for Virginia’s coastal regions.
Personally I think the Mars Rover made them downplay the unproven fictional global warming problems Virginia’s coast may face. For those interested in the ice melt problem please take a look at the below web site and give it a read rather than listen to a left wing zealot who makes a living dealing in fictional writing to push his leftist agenda.
State Senator Tom Courtney and his comrades have done nothing but tax and spend. It must end. It looks like the Republican Party of Iowa has other concerns.
Senator Courtney is a clear and present danger. Ron Paul's unsuccessful presidential campaign is not be a priority.
I get letters from the Republican Party of Iowa wanting money. After reading this, I will throw them away. Any check I write will be to Brad Bourn's Iowa Senate campaign. Anyone else wanting change should do the same for the candidate of their choice.
All contributions should go directly to the candidates this year. Satan Steve Scheffler and the Iowa GOP have made such a mess they do not deserve your money.
Make sure your contributions go directly to Brad Bourn to rid us of Tom Courtney's total lack of oversight of our tax dollars.
Don't feed the monkey. One day it will throw more crap at you. Send Courtney to the porch.
Without a doubt Burlington elected and appointed officials are some of the best non-thinkers in the State of Iowa. First off, they have a habit of building new schools on two lane east west thoroughfares on the outskirts of the city. Of course this means major traffic problems and slow speed limits from seven in the morning until four in the afternoon even though children are seldom present anywhere near the streets and seldom seen out of doors all day long.
They even have these baby speed limits for the High School also built on the outskirts of town far enough off the street area to not require such crawling speed limits. Again, even Division and Terrace are 20 mph during school hours as though high school kids can’t be responsible for their own safety thus requiring commerce slowing down all day long while the students sit inside.
Wouldn’t a normal person thought of a traffic problem on Mason Road since it is a main two lane road with heavy traffic? Now we have West Avenue and Mason Road major bottle necks when it wasn’t necessary to begin with. That school could have been built where old Horace Mann was by tearing down the administration buildings. Sunnyside is also in a bad location right next to Hwy. 61 requiring most of the students to be bused where that wasn’t the case with Oak Street or Horace Mann. Now we have students all over West Avenue and Sunnyside both major two lane roads heavily traveled east west arteries with kids on bikes, in peoples yards and just plain all over the place.
Burlington already ranks number three in crime for Iowa and now we’re ranked number one for brain dead inappropriate decision making by the school board. On top of it all the school system is basically a failure, students are leaving the district in large numbers and they’ve been on probation for who knows how long.
There’s just no end to the constant failures by the one party system running this town where nothing ever gets better with the constant increases in taxes and fees to feed the out of control democrats who in spite of their lies continue to be replaced year after year by the those special interest who support them and receive unfair wages and benefits off the backs of taxpayer.
Well, we have a new police chief Mr. Beaird and there will be little visible change with the new leadership. Crime doesn't seem to be one of the top priorities because there aren't any sufficient issues that need to be addressed.
It doesn't surprise me that one of our biggest challenges will be financial and that the other candidates just didn't have the expertise for the job in Burlington. Why would we hire anyone from out of town that might shuffle things up at the police department?
The community will have just about as much access to the chief as we had with the old one. The old chief was transparent. Maybe when the old chief cleaned out his locker maybe we can find the missing Gasland video tape.
Maybe the new chief will check into the drug dealings within two blocks of the school on Central Street and South Street. Burlington has always been one to take care of their own and I don't see where anything will be any different. Wouldn't it be nice to see the city Council take a stroll at midnight on South Hill or North hill and just see what is going on in Burlington.
All we hear about is Capital theater and people wanting apartments down town. From what it looks like to me the crime seems to be spreading out all over town.
Keep your doors locked and your weapons closer because this isn't going to get better.
I can't believe the city inspectors could let a building it into such bad shape as the county attorneys building is. If this was a private business the health department would have shut it down.
Knowing what we have for inspectors this doesn't surprise me at all. There is a house in the 3000 block of Sunnyside that has broken windows, a hole in the roof, there are no floors or drywall on the walls and birds and squirrels living in it. I asked a neighbor about the house and he told me it is been that way for over 20 years. What are our inspectors doing? I guess if you are a friend of the inspectors you can get by with anything.
I have been to the city attorney's office and it's not much better than the county attorneys. If you had an elevator that small in a private business it would be shut down. Seeing that the Kmart building will soon be empty we should put the Sheriff's office and the city police office together in that building. There is plenty of room to put cells in it and then maybe we wouldn't have to house them at the motel by the West Burlington Mall.
I don't believe 50% of the 1% sales tax is going to property relief. If they didn't have that money coming in the crooks would probably bail out and maybe we could get some honest people in local government.
And as far as having the city Council interview for the police chief is a waste of time for they think we don't have much crime anyway.
It's hard to believe that the house that was in the paper could have 12 apartments in it sure is a moneymaker for Mr. Newman. I wonder just how many rental properties he has like that must be a good friend with one of the inspectors.
Hope the new city police chief will address the crime problem we have in this town.
"Volunteers started knocking on doors at 9 a.m. Saturday to spread the message of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and the new Des Moines County Republican Headquarters at 3125 Agency St., formerly a Pizza Hut drive-thru, came to life during its grand opening."
This has not happened for years. What inspired them? Does this mean there is a chance we can get rid of Senator Courtney?
I think anyone who would vote for Obama a second time needs their head examined because we’ve had a non-functioning government ever since he was sworn in almost four years ago. The guy is a fraud and has only one agenda and that is to tear America down to third world status through his mandates, disregard for the constitution and constant bypassing of the congress.
Our entire government has been in shambles since he entered the White House. His entire administration is based on lies, filthy politics, false promises and outright deception.
Pole Dancer Publisher Steve Delaney, Brownie Mike Sweet Cancel Newsweek Subscriptions
"Newsweek’s latest cover story comes from none other than noted historian Niall Ferguson. The article, titled “Hit the Road, Barack,” argues that President Obama has proven that he‘s an economic illiterate and that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan’s “path to prosperity is our only hope.”
“Unemployment was supposed to be 6 percent by now. It has averaged 8.2 percent this year so far. Meanwhile real median annual household income has dropped more than 5 percent since June 2009. Nearly 110 million individuals received a welfare benefit in 2011, mostly Medicaid or food stamps,” writes Ferguson."
"Hey, remember when Nancy Pelosi and a gaggle of Democratic women vowed to eradicate Washington’s culture of corruption? Tee-hee. Instead of breaking up the Good Ol’ Boys Club, Capitol Hill’s leading liberal ladies have established their very own taxpayer-funded Sisterhood of the Plundering Hacks.
According to FoxNews.com’s Judson Berger, DHS chief of staff for Immigration and Customs Enforcement Suzanne Barr put herself on voluntary leave after details of her lewd behavior were disclosed as part of an ongoing discrimination and retaliation lawsuit. In “newly emerging affidavits,” Berger reported, “one of the employees claimed that in October 2009, while in a discussion about Halloween plans, the individual witnessed Barr turn to a senior ICE employee and say: ‘You a sexy [expletive deleted].’”
Clear cutting the eminent domain disaster (thank you, Senator Courtney) Manor Mall will improve the view. Those traveling north on US 61 will get an unobstructed view of a great retail real estate opportunity.
A big available sign on the late great Kmart property will inform any so interested of an existing, better location from which to do business.
"They are, after all, less likely to harm themselves and others."
Get the cameras rollin'. Get the test tubes growin'. It would take a generation, but Burlington's scourge of severely flawed City leaders may become History.
On the downside, the entertainment value provided by local leaders for Burlington Derailed would go the way of disco.
Like any science experiment gone bad, imagine a Super Worden, Super Hoschek, Super Courtney, Super Diewold, Super Ell, Super Dudley, Super Edwards, Super Power or Super King. It would take 4-5 generations to raise the bar to normal.
Obama visited the Iowa State Fair so he could see the fairgrounds’ famous Bud Tent for beers.
...the tent had to undergo a full Secret Service sweep of the area, which meant he was out of business for two hours, costing him roughly $25,000 in revenue, which Cunningham called making a “campaign contribution against my will. I wouldn’t have voted for him before. I won’t again.”
Day 2: A wind farm in central Iowa.
"Jeff Heil, the owner of the farm, and his son Jarret, who is a registered Republican and former staffer for Sen. Chuck Grassley, quietly stated they weren’t voting for Obama either: “It is important to not get caught up in the president's glamorous re-election words and remember President Obama's first term record and rhetoric do not represent Middle America, entrepreneurs, small business owners and farmers,” Jarret Heil said."
Day 3: Davenport.
"At the Obama event, which was catered by the Village Corner Deli, the Deli’s owner, Ross Murty, wore a black T-shirt with big, bold white letters that read, “Government didn’t build my business. I did.”
"Prices are low, farmers and ranchers need help, so it makes sense," Obama explained. "It makes sense for farmers who get to sell more of their product, and it makes sense for taxpayers who will save money because we're getting food we would have bought anyway at a better price."
None of this makes sense. In fact, Obama's move only harms American consumers while protecting a corrupt federal program."
As the drought drives commodity prices higher, command and control government farm policies are coming into question. Cheaper food, or a fuel that can not compete without tax abatement and other taxpayer subsidies?
Full bellies quell the masses. Bread riots have historically brought down the existing order. America as a major food exporter means this has international implications If it gets worse, look for food to win over fuel.
The Obama bailouts have run up trillions in federal debt. The District of Cronyism's cupboard is bare. Local governments in rural areas invested in ethanol will be further leaning on residents to fund their folly.
Des Moines County taxpayers should prepare another huge helping of cake from the Assessor's Office.
"While on the campaign trail in Danville, Virginia on Tuesday Biden remarked to Virginia Democratic supporters, "..that with you, and I mean this ladies and gentlemen. With you, we can win North Carolina again and if we do, we win the election, if we win you."
Invite Biden to Burlington. Let Jumble Mouth Joe tell us all that we must win Missouri for Marxism. Watch Senator Courtney squirm.
Did somebody let slip busing in same day voter registration "Iowans" from St. Louis?
"Intelligence and Special Operations forces are furious and frustrated at how President Obama and those in positions of authority have exploited their service for political advantage. Countless leaks, interviews and decisions by the Obama Administration and other government officials have undermined the success of our Intelligence and Special Operations forces and put future missions and personnel at risk.
The unwarranted and dangerous public disclosure of Special Forces Operations is so serious -- that for the first time ever -- former operators have agreed to risk their reputations and go 'on the record' in a special documentary titled "Dishonorable Disclosures." Its goal is to educate America about serious breaches of security and prevent them from ever happening again."
"In campaign remarks yesterday at the Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago, Illinois, President Barack Obama praised his adopted city, where he lived before becoming president of the United States. "Chicago is an example of what makes this country great," Obama said. His audience applauded."
Welcoming Chicago's problems to Burlington has not helped us. Neither will re-electing the anointed one spawned in Chicago's political sewers. The root of our trouble does not all lie in the liar's enclave on Lake Michigan.
Home grown Socialists like State Senator Courtney do not deserve re-election either.
"Clark also was unable to get out of his vehicle and walk on his own and perform roadside tests, according to the complaint. Clark was given a breath test that showed his blood alcohol content level at 0.486 percent.
He was hospitalized, and a blood test showed his blood alcohol content at 0.627 percent."
Have any of Burlington's local elected in living memory been able to top this feat?
A Simple Fix to Courtney's Aspen Grove Absentee Voters
The Democrats believe "a person should be able to walk into the voting place, state a name and then vote without any verification the person is, in fact, that name. Fortunately, the American people loudly disagree.
Courtney's Total Dereliction of Oversight Responsibility
"Wendol Jarvis served as film officer manager during Gov. Terry Branstad’s previous four-term stint as governor. He says the fiasco was a mix of incompetency and greed that caused widespread damage. He says whatever course Iowa takes, the state must provide trust and security."
Incompetency in the Iowa Senate's Oversight Committee made a huge difference. Where was committee member Senator Tom Courtney when all this went down?
Voters in November will decide which incumbents end up on the cutting room floor. Take a look around Burlington. This year's campaign should be Senator Courtney's "Last Picture Show."
1. No one over the age of 55 would be affected in any way.
2. Traditional Medicare fee-for-service would remain available for all. “Premium support”—that is, government funding of private insurance plans chosen by individuals—is an option for those who choose it. No senior would be forced out of the traditional Medicare program against his will.
3. Overall funding for Medicare under the Ryan-Wyden plan is scheduled to grow at the same rate as under President Obama’s proposals. Is this “gutting Medicare” and “ending Medicare as we know it”? In reality, it’s the market giving seniors cheaper, higher quality choices they can take if they wish, with the traditional program remaining an option."
Delaney in his Saturday spew has chosen to bring up the idea that Burlington needs an indoor recreational facility to go along with the RecPlex that has cost taxpayers over $1 million since it opened its doors just to make up for the losses accumulated over the first ten years or so.
Just because Waterloo/Cedar Falls area is probably close to 103,666 people versus all of Des Moines County coming in at 42,351 citizens that puts Waterloo/Cedar Falls about 2.5 times the size of our entire Des Moines County population. On top of that the new library was to be a huge asset to the city and county bringing in jobs and other great things to Burlington and since it’s opening things have just gotten worse for the city with a crime rating of number three (3) in Iowa and where are the jobs other than those created to work at the new library, just more government jobs causing higher taxes for the taxpayers.
The biggest problems for Burlington are inadequate city and country governments, exceptionally high crime rates (much higher than the national rankings), out of control drug problems, falling down infrastructure, failing schools, large indigent population for the size of the town just to name a few of the problems. What new business would want to set up shop in a town with all of Burlington’s problems and don’t forget Iowa is about the worst state to start a new business because of its taxes and other anti business legislation created by the democrat’s.
Delaney should start a drive to reduce crime with the Hawk Eye’s editorial page instead of always propping up Obama and his stooges and tell Mike to stop blaming Bush when it's Obama and his failed administration that’s kept the entire country in bondage. Bring out in the open the crime they hide from the citizens such as the gang robbery of the Gas Land on Summer St. Start riding city hall for making so many asinine decisions and wasting taxpayer money. Stop acting like Burlington is some type of paradise when it’s nothing more than a dirty old Iowa river town that’s falling apart at the seams through a single party of dimwit politicians providing a poorly run government at best.
The last two city managers were nothing more than disgraceful crooks at best with neither one of them capable of running a Kool-Aid stand and a city council loaded to the gills with yes men, again incapable of handling the decisions required to pull Burlington up out of the gutter of failure we’ve been in for decades.
In the U.S. the gay population is only about 11 million but the Hawk Eye prints a huge story on page 4A the other day titled, Openly gay athletes scarce at Olympics. With all the problems this country has on its plate why would anyone worry about how many gay athletes were at the Olympics, I sure as hell didn’t care to hear or read about that because it’s basically unimportant and only on the minds of J.C. Penny and Target who are trying to force that lifestyle through their ads on normal people as though its important. I think Penny’s is finding out what its cost them to push the gay lifestyle over that of the average American family.
No Steve, these propaganda ploys to entice business to Burlington haven’t worked in the past and more than likely won’t in the future. Burlington has a long way to go before it ever reaches normalcy and can do things a normal city run by normal people can experience, after all we still owe for the last major mistake this town made when it tried its get rich scheme with the Manor.
Why don’t the Hawk Eye be honest and tell the people why the Manor was a major mistake and why the city couldn’t meet payroll last month and who was responsible and don’t try to tell us it was because of George Bush that’s getting a bit stale after 3.5 years of it.
Balloon Bob Vander Plaats Still Chasing Judges Instead of Barack Obama
Resident Iowa Nit-Wit-in-Chief Balloon Bob Vander Plaats along with the GOP boss, are out chasing judges again. In a presidential election year. With corn crops tight and contributions even tighter.
Mind you, not all agree with the Iowa Supreme Court Judges' decision on gay marriage. Notwithstanding, that some days you need to purge judges from office, the judges ruled correctly. We need the legislature to change the law.
But don't you think it is more important to remove Barack Obama from office than it is to chase judges? Why not put the effort of the Balloon Bobbers and the GOP to better use than searching for Quixote windmills?
Balloon Bob has nothing more than an empty barn fetish. He has no money, no crops, no cattle, no pigs, no land.
All he has is your money if you cave into this stupidity.
Isn't the future of the country more important than a tickle down Bob's leg.
“First of all, that’s a Priorities USA ad. It is not a Democratic ad. It’s a Priorities USA super PAC,” Wasserman Schultz said. “I have no idea the political affiliation of folks who are associated with that super PAC. … that is not affiliated with our campaign or with the party.”
"Iowa Republican National Committeeman Steve Scheffler acknowledged, like many in the crowd, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was not his first choice to take on Obama. But he said in his calculation, having a candidate who supports 90 to 95 percent of the policies Republicans support is better than someone who supports 0 percent."
Thank you for JP's comments on Satan in Southeast Iowa. Such a left handed endorsement of Governor Romney is a disgrace from a member of his party's National Committee. It appears Satan puts his personal Political Action Committee paycheck before his national party position.
Burlington city management looks at the renewal of the penny sales tax as would a drunkard sailor to a night on the town after being at sea for six months. This money will go for dreams of grandeur and little if any real property tax relief for the overtaxed and over charged for services taxpayer’s although the city employees will continue their “Privileged Class” status at taxpayer expense.
It would be interesting to see just how many private sector jobs were created by the previous ten (10) years of the tax if any. What relief will the $30,000 given to the Capital Theater provide the taxpayer? When the city can’t manage the waterworks at reasonable rates how the hell could they ever manage a hydroelectric plant at the dam while wasting $80,000 for a feasibility study. What the hell has this city ever provided the taxpayers for the hundreds of thousands they’ve wasted on studies in the past? The Hawk Eye is still here after it was pointed out as a negative influence on landing new business in previous surveys.
It’s like the extremely high crime rate in Burlington that the paper never writes editorials about, the council never brings it up as though it just doesn’t exist. People are talking about it all the time yet the paper ignores it like the plague and the past chief of police had said crime hasn’t gone up, did he expect people to actually believe him when he said that? The crime rating of Burlington is above the national average on eight of ten crimes listed and here’s the report for 2008: Crime Report for Burlington Iowa
The eastern side of Iowa has turned into the armpit of Iowa where the top three crime cities are all located, Keokuk, Davenport and Burlington. Looks like all the ducks are lined up in a column down the Mississippi River. Burlington has one police officer for every 595 citizens. Davenport has one police officer for every 618 citizens While Keokuk has one police officer for every 411 citizens. By the way Keokuk ranks number one for crime in the state of Iowa, Davenport number two and Burlington number three. Davenport is over nine times the size of Keokuk and about four times the size of Burlington.
I would imagine the people living south of the Cascade Bridge would have appreciated the city taking care of the bridge rather than letting it fall into ruin through lack of any care at all. What happened to the maintenance money for that bridge over the past few decades? Why did the city need a fountain down at the port area when the Cascade Bridge was in dire need of repair?
The city had approximately $5.5 million to blow on the Manor but were going to shut down the local pool this summer for lack of $20,000 to keep it open. I wonder how much money the city had for raises and bonus money to an already bloated work force?
I wonder who provided the funds for those sales tax signs stuck in peoples yards and down at the port? I hope they didn’t waste tax dollars on such foolishness but that would be wishful thinking in this one horse town, wouldn’t it?
"AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says a record 400,000 union-based volunteers will be knocking on doors and talking to voters in all 50 states later this year.
...It is also noteworthy that Trumka is a regular visitor of the White House, sometimes visiting the White House more than once a week. This is what Trumka said about his relationship with the Obama administration in 2011:
“I’m at the White House a couple times a week. Two, three times a week. I have conversations everyday with someone in the White House or in the administration — Everyday.
...Interestingly enough, all the videos we could find of Trumka’s remarks have been scrubbed from YouTube due to “copyright infringements.”
Do you know why there are only three voting places for the city tax? Could it be to make it harder for the elderly to get out the vote? I know they want to push this city tax penny sales tax through but why aren't we voting at our usual place?
I would like to know under what authority campaign signs were placed on city right-of-way at every entrance to the Farmer's Market last Thursday?
Satan Steve Scheffler Touts His Agenda, Not GOP's at Fund Raiser
Condescending Little Guy Tells Us How to View Mitt Romney
Scheffler Perfect Illustration of GOP Adrift in Right Wing Voo Doo
I see the poor old members of the Lee County GOP can no longer think for themselves. It sure is a good thing the condescending little money launderer, Satan Steve Scheffler, came to the GOP fundraiser to tell us all how to think like him.
Satan, I don't care what you think or that the newspaper prints your remarks out of context as you might claim to defend your outrageous self-aggrandizing impression that we give a shi* what you think.
I see where a landlord is being held responsible for some scum bag renters use of or manufacturing of meth, in the landlords rental.
My question is why wouldn’t the scum that caused the problem be held responsible for the cleanup instead of the landlord? The person responsible for the problem should be the one responsible for the cleanup. These people should be put on a chain gang or forced to work until they pay off the landlord for ruining his property and the loss of his rental income during the cleanup. Or, the authorities can take the proceeds from drug confiscated property sold at auction for the cleanup.
Actually, this isn’t much different than holding the taxpayer’s of Burlington responsible for all millions of dollars lost through our constantly incapable city management and council over the past several decades. Or, similar to the constant increases in the water, trash and sewer fee’s (taxes) that rise on a constant basis to cover the losses because of again, poor city management coupled with grossly ignorant dreams of grandeur by city management. Of course there’s always the constant rise in taxes every year to continue the lifestyle of the city, county and state employees who live the life of a ‘Privileged class” unlike the people robbed to cover their recession free existence.
Harkin has been a politician all of his life and became a millionaire through insider trading as have most all of the congress. Harkin lied about his Vietnam experience and we all know just being a politician means Harkin is a natural born liar and why women would believe anything he says is beyond comprehension.
He now thinks he’s qualified to instruct women on how to manage their menstrual cycles and they should all run to the closest Planned Parenthood and pick up free birth control pills a known possible drug that can cause cancer, of all things.
When is this state going to rid us of Harkin and his liberal dimwit dogma that is further destroying our country everyday he remains in office. He’s a loser otherwise he’d of gotten out of politics long ago and tried working for a living. If it weren’t for Obama he’d be the most liberal dimwit in Washington.
In my opinion I would have to say Harry Reid has done a good job of lining his pockets through unscrupulous means since he’s been in government service. Just read this article and you will see what makes a loud mouth liberal loser: How Did Harry Reid Become Rich?
How does a miner’s son put five children through college and be worth over six (6) million having never worked in the private sector? Just add up his salary since being in the government and then add up the cost of living during all those years and there’s no way he could have amassed six (6) million.
We all know how Romney earned his millions; so why doesn’t old Harry tell us how he managed the impossible by putting his money away to the tune of four (4) to six (6) million dollars depending on how you measure it. He’s never been honest about his taxes either, just like Pelosi and the rest of the crooks in Washington.
* The price of gas – When Obama took office, a gallon of gas cost you $1.85. Today, it’s up to $3.59 per gallon (July’s rise was 17 cents a gallon).
* 71% of small business owners believe we’re still in a recession — Despite government claims that the recession actually ended years ago, a majority of small business owners feel very differently.
* You have to work 107 days each year just to pay Federal, State, & Local taxes – That means you don’t earn a penny until April 18th.
* More than 30% of unemployed Americans have been out of work for more than a year – In 2007, that number was 10%.
* Low income America – According to NBC News, virtually half of all Americans are considered to be “low income” or living in poverty.
* Propping up the economy by monetizing our massive debt — In 2008, the Federal Reserve bought “negligible” amounts of our debt, last year the Fed purchased 61% of the government debt issued by the Treasury Dept.
* Speaking of “no faith in the US Dollar” – The price of gold when Obama was inaugurated, $850 an ounce. Today, gold is over $1500.
* The disappearing family farm – In the mid-1930s, America had an estimated 6.8 million farms. Today, the EPA estimates that number to be right around two million (and getting squeezed more and more by constricting regulation).
* Another (bad) trade record set with China – In 2011, our trade deficit with China was almost $300 billion dollars. That is the single highest deficit that one country has had with another… ever.
* A stunning amount spent on stupid studies like Why do chimps throw their poop? – Almost $600,000 of your tax dollars was sent to the folks who studied chimpanzee poop tossing, plus $198,195 paid to find out if “tweeting” makes people happy… It’s all HERE.
“There are many women who take birth control pills, for example, because they have terrible menstrual cramps once a month, some of them almost incapacitated, can’t work,” said Harkin. “I know of young women myself who, because of this, aren’t able to work and be productive, and it’s prescribed by their doctor.”

Harry Reid "Dirty Liar"? NO! Reid Is A Dirty Damn Liar!!
GOP chairman calls Sen. Reid a 'dirty liar' on Romney's taxes
"On Sunday, the campaigns sent emissaries to the morning interview shows to ratchet up the rhetoric.
“I think he’s lying,” Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) said on CNN about Reid. “I think he’s created an issue here. I think he’s making things up.”
“I’m not going to respond to a dirty liar,” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said during an interview on ABC’s "This Week." The host, George Stephanopoulos gave him a chance to temper his remarks.
“You stand by that — you think Harry Reid is a dirty liar?” asked Stephanopoulos.
“I just said it,” replied Priebus."
This just smacks of people like Tom Courtney and his ilk. Dirty damn liars!
"Shares of People's Daily Online Co, the online portal of the official newspaper People's Daily, closed up 9.99 percent at 38.19 yuan ($6.06) in Shanghai yesterday, and its trading had to be halted since yesterday morning."
Ann Romney slammed for $990 Shirt, Michelle Obama praised for $6,800 jacket
"Back in May, Ann Romney, wife of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, wore a $990 Reed Krakoff silk shirt for a media appearance. The item of clothing set off a media firestorm, with the Romneys widely accused of being “out of touch” with average Americans.
In particular, the Washington Post wrote that the $990 blouse “will not help her husband change those perceptions, no matter how many Laundromat photo ops are on the campaign’s itinerary.”
Fast forward to last Friday, when First Lady Michelle Obama attended an Olympics reception for heads of state at Buckingham Palace, donning a J. Mendel cap sleeve jacket from the 2013 Resort collection."
I see where the city wants to up the fees for waste disposal because of lousy city management now and in the past. Our city management is a joke at best and couldn’t manage their way out of a wet paper bag.
Hell with the citizen taxpayers who are getting screwed by the utility company, water company, cable company, phone company while the biggest thief is the city government itself that has ruined the lives of so many of Burlington’s citizens dependent on Social Security and/or fixed incomes.
What about those on fixed incomes, how are they to make up the higher fees charged through ignorance in management principles and despicable decision making by a bunch of democrat dimwits holed-up down at city hall. Democrats have sold out the taxpayer for the money and votes provided by government unions which have made them the “Privileged Class” in Iowa. It’s again, screw the taxpayer in Burlington the arm pit of Iowa. The 3rd most crime ridden city out of 900 plus cities and towns in Iowa and a den of rotten political misfits who have just messed up the city beyond comprehension.
Just take a look around Burlington and you will see how the demographics have changed over the past several years and the situation is just going to get worse. The crime is worse than cities four times the size of Burlington, drugs are the mainstay for a large portion of the citizens many of whom are dependent on stealing and the taxpayer for their livelihood. We have people pushing stolen grocery carts down the streets picking up trash to try and earn a living. I wonder what it really meant when the Hack Eye printed an article that contained the following, “Burlington needs the workers” a couple of years ago or so when the rush to change Burlington demographics really began to flow. Problem is Burlington is only the surrogate for Columbus Junction and other surrounding towns who actually needed the workers while Burlington continues to fail as usual in enticing new industry to town.
What this deadbeat town really needs to do is make all city employees pay at least 20 percent of their health benefits and take a 20 percent cut in pay to being them down closer to the private sector, although still overpaid it would be a windfall to the city and the taxpayer who has been cheated out of so much of his or her income because of government unions it probably should be ranked as a crime if nothing else.
The lousy water rates continue to increase on a bimonthly basis and everyone knows city employees are sinfully overpaid to the point of just plain sickening. Why is it that state government, county government, federal government all run by democrats always in financial trouble and are constantly taking money from others to further their hypocritical dreams of grandeur that seldom if ever pan out. Democrats must have been very different when they founded the KKK many years ago and where were they when the Republicans passed the civil rights bill in the early 60’s?
Burlington is on the road to Detroit status as long as the democrats are in control because their too dumb to understand what they’re doing and have been doing for the past several decades. Democratic politicians are nothing more than stooges for the unions who control them from top to bottom. The constant fee and tax increases are the result of the marriage between unions and democrats a rotten situation from top to bottom for the average citizens. Government unions were kept out of the system by Roosevelt but after he died the courtship between unions and democrats began to flourish until their now destroying our quality of life forever.
Unlike Burlington where robberies such as this go unreported by the police and the press while the video is conveniently lost at police headquarters not that this surprises anyone who is familiar with the local police.
The flash robbery of the Gas Land Store on Summer occurred over a year ago and nothing has ever been done to solve the case even with the video, local authorities have just ignored the crime entirely. The video must have contained incriminating views of important Burlington do-gooder offspring or something to that effect.
Burlington didn’t get the states 3rd highest crime rating by solving crimes but rather by seldom solving crimes which makes Burlington a selected hot spot for criminals. Why do Burlington’s crime statistics exceed the nations averages in eight out of ten areas?
"We are pleased to announce that the Ford Foundation has awarded a $500,000 grant to The Washington Post to expand its government-accountability reporting at the national and local levels."
Why the Ford Foundation is extending grants to allegedly for profit, formerly profitable newspaper companies perplexes. If Ford is handing out money to improve government accountability reporting, what about Burlington?
Government accountability reporting on Burlington's single party system by the Ad Vertiser is like power steering on a Model T. There is none. Somebody should apply for a Ford Foundation grant to offer scrap value for the Ad Vertiser and junk it. The balance of the grant would be used to design a new model for distribution on the net.
