Burlington Derailed — The Continuing Story

So Went Newsland So Goes the Ad Vertiser

""It's hard to make money selling just newspapers and magazines," he said, "Even when business is booming, I can sell no more than 50 magazines."

Around the world the newsstand is vanishing. Also vanishing are print magazines and newspapers. Even newsstand owner Mr. Xia in Beijing gets his news from a mobile phone.

Online news sources providing timely, accurate information will draw an audience and make it selling advertising. The slackers build paywalls.

The Ad Vertiser clings to a paywall like a life raft. The Ad Vertiser's continuing decline was recently illustrated by its failure to report a nearby fatal fire.

Varied periodicals you used to buy at Newsland you now find online. At the rate the Ad Vertiser is failing, it will soon join Newsland as nothing but a memory.

The Money's in Advertising, Not Subscriptions

"The 162-year-old publisher is racing to increase revenue from online subscriptions fast enough to make up for falling ad sales. Most of its revenue now comes from readers, not advertisers -- a reversal from historical patterns."

Comparing the demise of the New York Times to the Ad Vertiser, the Ad Vertiser met the benchmarks of decline years ago.

How long do you give the Ad Vertiser until it folds?

Saturday Fatal House Fire Kills Man - Burlington newspaper ignores "News"

On Saturday afternoon (October 26th), a major house fire roared at a location between Carman, IL and Gladstone, IL near the tiny hamlet of Hopper, IL.

The billowing smoke from the fire was easily seen from Burlington, with the fire's location less than ten miles from the Great River Bridge and from the offices of the Burlington Hawkeye and firefighters from Burlington assisted other area fire departments in containing the blaze.

The fire also claimed a victim, a male resident of the home.

So there is a FATAL HOUSE FIRE, located within a few short miles of Burlington and within it's supposed "news coverage area".

Yet when I opened up the Sunday edition of the Burlington Hawkeye to read and to learn more details about this tragedy, I could not find anything about it!

Well, I figured that maybe the paper and the minions in the news department didn't have a chance to get an article in about the "fatal house fire" for the Sunday edition but that there would be some information published in Monday's edition about the fatal fire. I just read today's paper from front to back, yet there is still NO information about this "fatal fire" anywhere in the paper's Monday edition. Stunning!

Thank goodness for Fox 18 news from the Quad Cities. Information about the "Fatal Fire" was the lead story on the Fox18 News following the World Series game it broadcast on Sunday evening.

Kind of sad (pathetic actually) that I have to find out information about this tragic story from our regional TV news programs located nearly 100 miles away, yet nothing is printed in the local daily newspaper at all, either yesterday or today.

Yet nothing...NOTHING...about this major news story in the Burlington Hawkeye. Wow!

The Hawkeye can now best be described as "The Incredible Shrinking Newspaper" where the "Opinion Page" is now often located on Page 4 and the lack of locally-written area news stories are obvious compared to previous years.

I also wonder about the quality of the reporters that the Hawkeye have hired in recent years.

The so-called "Political Reporter" seems more interested in her ridiculous "Foodie" blog that she publishes in the paper each week than in the political stories she is supposed to covering.

And the reporter I personally refer to as "GameBoy" seems more interested in writing reviews of the latest X box games he admittedly plays for hours and hours and hours than in providing worthy news articles for the newspaper he is employed by.

I've been a subscriber of the Burlington Hawkeye for a number of years. Yet I've been concerned over the past few years about the lack and quality of local news information that the paper currently provides versus even what the paper provided to its subscribers a decade or more ago.

This morning, I've made the decision to permanently end my subscription to the Burlington Hawkeye when my current subscription expires in several months. It just isn't worth the price of a subscription anymore, especially when they can't, don't or won't cover local news stories like a "Fatal House Fire."

The Hawkeye - Now It's Reagan's Fault

Why would the Hawk Eye chastise Reagan on their editorial page today since was president from 1981 – 1989 and has been dead and gone for several years now.

I like the way the Hawk Eye tries to justify the crap Obama has been doing ever since he was elected by the low information voters. Obama knows nothing about leadership or being president and has proven it every time he makes a speech, most of which are littered with outright lies and innuendoes not unknown for people without negotiation skills or leadership knowledge.

Basically, America is foreign to Obama a person whose parents and grandparents along with his mentors were all involved in the communist way of life. Obama himself has no idea of what America stands for nor does he really care because he’s just like his parents and other communist types he was raised around.

Obama has so many failures and disasters many of which are hidden by the mainstream press and news networks most Americans don't have a clue just how ineffective this Obama guy really is.

So here are a few bullet points on his major failures and/or distractions this guy has been involved in over the past year.

·Benghazi where American citizens were killed and he tried to cover it up and refuses to admit his involvement in the cover up and why the killing was allowed to go on for about eight hours while he himself vanished and has never indicated where he was or what he was doing while the Americans were being killed.

·What happened to Snowdon and how could he have run off with secret information?

·Why won’t Obama negotiate with Republicans, could it be his lack of knowing how government works?

·Syria, where Putin upended him very easily prompting Time Magazine to remove Obama’s picture and substitute a football player on its American cover. The same issue for the rest of the world had Obama’s picture on the cover. Apparently Time didn’t want to harm his ego by being upstaged at home by Putin, just shows how the media protects his failed administration and always has.

·The IRS scandal where the administration has done everything it could to hide the crime from the public and the press.

·Constantly spying on American citizens through many illegal methods banned by the Constitution.

·Has done little to nothing to recover our economy after about five years on the job.

·Obama voted 'no' on raising the debt limit as a Senator in 2006 but now he wants to raise it and shove it down the throat of the American people. Why did he change his mind on raising the debt limit when he was dead set against such a move previously?

·Now he’s been caught spying on the Mexican President, Brazil and other allies while his spying on all Americans just like it was done on the German people in Nazi Germany when their dictator took charge just as Obama has.

·He’s granted congress, their staffs and other government stooges exempt from the Obamacurse with huge subsidies when he doesn’t even have the authority by bypassing congress. This is just another sign he knows little to nothing about the constitutional form of government we have.

Then we have The Affordable Care Act that is an entirely Democrat bill that will eventually fall flat on its own once the people find out they’ve been duped by Obama and the Democrats into a potential fraud generating catastrophic failure of the bill.

In California, the exchanges are being run by Obama’s rogue political organizations such as Acorn, Planned Parenthood and SEIU all of which are involved in numerous scandals indicating the involvement of untrustworthy people having access to the American people’s most private information. What kind of special interest move is this by the Obama administration?

Now we have questionable organizations already imbedded in the Affordable Care Act. I thought it was a government program and not a special interest campaign by Obama. Why would any honest program hire the likes of groups such as these to run the exchanges?

I guess buying votes and supporting baby killers and left wing organizations is just the way Obama likes it in America. It would appear that those that change your hotel bedding are also capable of knowing your most secret personal data as well, thanks to the government.

Kentucky Kickback for McConnell

Kentucky Senator McConnell Greases Both Palms

"Not a single U.S. senator objected to an appropriation dubbed the “Kentucky kickback” included in legislation passed Wednesday to reopen the federal government and raise the debt ceiling to avoid default, a senior Republican Senate aide told TheBlaze.

“Every single member of the Senate reviewed the list of appropriations and consented to have the vote,” the aide said.

The bill, which was negotiated between Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), contains several appropriations, including a more than $2 billion increase in authorized funding for the Olmsted Locks and Dam project, which runs through parts of Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. The project has been under construction for nearly 20 years."

"“In exchange for funding Obamacare and raising the debt limit, Mitch McConnell secured a $2 billion Kentucky kickback,” Matt Hoskins, executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, said in a blog post. “This is an insult to Kentucky families who don’t want to pay for Obamacare and who don’t want to shoulder any more debt.”

“Mitch McConnell is trying to blame others for this abuse, but everyone knows he negotiated this deal and everyone knows he wrote the bill. If he didn’t want the earmark included, he could have kept it out,” the post said."

Who Shut Down the Government? Facts vs. Liberal MSM Lies & Opinion

"There is really nothing complicated about the facts. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted all the money required to keep all government activities going — except for ObamaCare.

This is not a matter of opinion. You can check the Congressional Record.

As for the House of Representatives' right to grant or withhold money, that is not a matter of opinion either. You can check the Constitution of the United States. All spending bills must originate in the House of Representatives, which means that Congressmen there have a right to decide whether or not they want to spend money on a particular government activity.

...the whole point of having a division of powers within the federal government is that each branch can decide independently what it wants to do or not do, regardless of what the other branches do, when exercising the powers specifically granted to that branch by the Constitution.

The hundreds of thousands of government workers who have been laid off are not idle because the House of Representatives did not vote enough money to pay their salaries or the other expenses of their agencies — unless they are in an agency that would administer ObamaCare.

...If Senator Reid and President Obama refuse to accept the money required to run the government, because it leaves out the money they want to run ObamaCare, that is their right. But that is also their responsibility.

You cannot blame other people for not giving you everything you want. And it is a fraud to blame them when you refuse to use the money they did vote, even when it is ample to pay for everything else in the government.

When Barack Obama keeps claiming that it is some new outrage for those who control the money to try to change government policy by granting or withholding money, that is simply a bald-faced lie. You can check the history of other examples of "legislation by appropriation" as it used to be called.

...Perhaps the biggest of the big lies is that the government will not be able to pay what it owes on the national debt, creating a danger of default. Tax money keeps coming into the Treasury during the shutdown, and it vastly exceeds the interest that has to be paid on the national debt.

Even if the debt ceiling is not lifted, that only means that government is not allowed to run up new debt. But that does not mean that it is unable to pay the interest on existing debt." - Thomas Sowell

- Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305.

I think this is a good explanation of why there was a government shutdown instituted by Obama and Reid. The house can allocate money anyway it seems fit since it’s their power to do so and Obama has nothing to do with it but Reid can tell the senate to vote against it if they want to shut down the entire government which is what he’s been doing all along.

So; Obama, Reid and the Senate decided to shut down the government on their own, for reasons having nothing to do with shutting down the government but forcing Obamacare onto the population.

Although many in government refuse to accept it, Obama lets them opt out of the plan while getting taxpayer subsidies from the government for their insurance while the middleclass get nothing but the ungodly bills for it.

How much more will the American people tolerate with this exceptionally ignorant, egotistical and narcissist president?

Bummed About the GOP Congressional Debacle? John Wayne’s Wisdom on Liberals From Nearly 40 Years Ago Might Help

Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013 isn’t exactly a banner day if you come from a politically conservative perspective.

It’s the first day after Congressional Republicans by many accounts made a big show over delaying Obamacare implementation during a government shutdown and then appeared weak, caving to Democrats in the 11th hour.

It’s also the day after Newark Mayor Cory Booker — who’s made news of late over a Twitter friendship with a vegan stripper, an allegedly imaginary drug-lord friend named T-Bone, and allegations that he doesn’t actually live in Newark — actually managed to win a U.S. Senate seat in New Jersey.

...“They never listen to your point of view, and they make a decision as to what you think, and they’re articulate enough and in control of enough of the press to force that image out for the average person.”

Study Burlington to Know Gambling as Fools' Gold

"A study is getting underway to analyze the market statewide for the possible addition of new casinos, while another study that will look at a totally different aspect of the industry is also in the works. Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission administrator, Brian Ohorilko, says a law passed in 2004 gives the direction for the second study."

Gambling has been in Burlington longer than most Iowa cities. One of Iowa's early gambling boats was based in Burlington. What great promises we were told it would hold.

It was not about gambling. It was about river cruise tourism. People from everywhere else would flock here and bless us with their losses. Not too much. We were not greedy. There would be a $500 a day loss limit.

Downtown Burlington was where the gambling boat would dock. It would bring the Hotel Burlington back to its early 20th Century glory. Between the boat and their lodgings, the tourists would shop at Schramm's and other businesses. Downtown Burlington would boom as when Model T Fords lined Jefferson Street.

Not just downtown, but all of Burlington and surrounding environs would feast upon the riches to be reaped.

Examine the results.

Gambling is everywhere. Most now come to gamble from the same trade area as local big box stores. $500 a day did not hold sway for long. Lose your kids college education fund at craps and slots.

Downtown Burlington never benefited before the gambling boat was tied up for good. Land based is cheaper than running roulette on a raft. Welcome ashore.

Fare thee well Ft. Madison. Welcome to Huck's Hole. Burlington taxpayers were dunked in the swimming pool.

The depression in 2008 proved gambling is not depression proof. An explosion of casinos had created market saturation. Many casinos across the country hit a losing streak. Some went belly up.

Burlington's casino was no exception. Vendors had to say C. O. D. Call for more margin. The stock holders scrambled to cover their certain bets on a sure thing.

Burlington's casino continues to get by. Stock holders who bragged 15 years ago about their casino dividends lately have little to say. Losers never brag. The biggest losers are problem gamblers.

Everybody knows of one. The house they used to live in. Where they used to work. The divorce and among those younger, the child custody fights. $500 dollar a day lose limits were supposed to make riverboat gambling a family attraction. EBT cards and Obama phones are handed out like watered down Coke at the casino's beverage bar.

Thankfully, Burlington is not all of Iowa. Clinton's situation is similar to Burlington. The railroad car shops are gone. Gone also are a lot of other well paying, old manufacturing enterprises. Clinton had a gambling boat that went ashore later than Burlington's.

Drive through downtown Clinton. Except for routine building collapses, it's downtown Burlington all over again. Go west to Osecola and see the results of a riverboat casino on a farm pond.

Don't say Dubuque is disproof. Dubuque had millions of tax dollars dumped into non gambling tourist attractions near its casinos. Dubuque is a short drive from a well established weekend destination for Chicago's wealthy, Galena, IL.

Gambling as an economic turnaround is a fallacy. Those casinos making a go in Iowa do so off economic activity that actually creates wealth primarily in the same retail trade area.

Gold in the change, not hardly.

These 6 Corporations Control 90% Of The Media In America

"This infographic created by Jason at Frugal Dad shows that almost all media comes from the same six sources.

That's consolidated from 50 companies back in 1983.

NOTE: This infographic is from last year and is missing some key transactions. GE does not own NBC (or Comcast or any media) anymore. So that 6th company is now Comcast. And Time Warner doesn't own AOL, so Huffington Post isn't affiliated with them.

But the fact that a few companies own everything demonstrates "the illusion of choice," Frugal Dad says. While some big sites, like Digg and Reddit aren't owned by any of the corporations, Time Warner owns news sites read by millions of Americans every year."

Details of the U.S. Bank Deal for the Police Department Hidden from Taxpayers

I found out the city of Burlington itself approached U.S. Bank at 201 Jefferson Street from out of the cold and asked to buy the bank. In other words, the bank wasn’t for sale and the city asked them to sell it to them and the real truth of the matter was the city apparently lied to the taxpayers and the Hawk Eye about exactly what happened from start to finish.

Actually, the city and/or county went hat in hand asking the bank to sell the building for the joint police facility. If the city knew the problems with the building why and the hell would they go begging for it?

The bank is plagued with mold problems and the utility bills are outrageously expensive. The bank not wanting to miss an opportunity to get rid of it more than likely would have jumped at the chance had the deal progressed to closure.

I don’t recall any of this information being published by the Hawk Eye and it could have been they were lied to by the city because the city wanted the building - problems and all - and the bank was glad a sucker came along out of nowhere wanting to buy it and then the problem would have been shoved onto the Burlington taxpayers.

Somehow I thought the city had learned some lessons after the Manor failure, the Cascade Bridge fiasco, the street problems, the failed RecPlex, Bees ballpark, the waterpark and on and on but it appears nothing can rid Burlington of constant democratic failures and dreams of grandeur that still persist to this day because of Burlington’s one party of political fools.

Reply to Whacko Thinking on Where to Make Budget Cuts

A reader suggested in the Letters section of the local rag that we lay off the city manager and not cut the library staff and then have the city council run the show without the manager.

This would be insane because the city council doesn’t have enough sense to get out of the rain. In the past, the city council went along with every hair-brained, dumb dream of grandeur that got us into this perpetual financial mess.

Burlington hasn’t had a good elected staff in city hall for over two decades and maybe even longer. On top of that we’ve had crooked, loser city managers until the current one stepped into office.

Putting Worden in there was the most ridicules misstep anyone could have made and having him in charge of the money was a mega tsunami mistake for Burlington. We also had Iowa’s most losing lawyer reaping windfall profits off the taxpayers because of the constant stupid mistakes taken by the city council. And no one ever looked at his bills.

I wonder when the council will take the right step and cut wages and benefits for the city “Privileged Class Employees” by far the biggest bite out of the budget. These people are no better than those that work in the private sector and since their wages and benefits take the largest bite out of the pie their privileged lifestyles should be reduced down to what the private sector earns and they should start paying for some of their free pricy benefits.

Until this happens the city will never get out of debt because all their doing is skirting around the real sustaining cause for the continuous financial disaster. City government wages and benefits are excessively high in comparison to the private sector. Remember when the city and the unions start contract talks the unions are represented on both sides of the table and the taxpayers have no one representing them at all; so guess who loses during these so called bargaining sessions?

Mr. Larson should remember the people voted down the library twice and the library was built anyway and why does Burlington need the most expensive public library in the state? Our library director earns more than the director at the Davenport library, a city about four times as big a Burlington? Each citizen in Burlington pays, at last count, a $55 tax for library services while most Iowa cities run about $20 to $32 per year per citizen.

Another question is where are the jobs, other than the library itself, that were supposed to be brought into Burlington by having such a Taj Mahal library? The entire infrastructure in the city is falling down around it with the exception of the new schools which haven’t done much of anything to improve life in Burlington with the exception of the teachers and staff.

The only hope for Burlington is the voters but the one party city leaves Burlington out of the loop for ever solving its problems and constant failures because no matter who is elected, they all think alike, leaving us always on the outside looking in.

And why can’t Burlington attract good industrial jobs like other cities in Iowa do? I think electing retired teachers and Case employees just hasn’t worked out for Burlington because of the union warped thinking it induces in all government personnel.

Government employee unions with their voter payoffs are immoral and ruinous to taxpayers. It's killing Burlington and Des Moines County.

Kwame Goes Away Like The Democrats Before Him

A former Democrat Party rising star is going behind bars.

What does it take to separate criminal intent from incompetence where there has been malfeasance of office? What does it take to make an indictable case? What is the statute of limitations in Iowa?

A Record-Setting Blizzard Killed 75,000 Cows and You Might Not Have Even Heard About It

"Ranchers are still digging out thousands of their cattle that became buried in a record-setting snowstorm in South Dakota late last week and over the weekend.

One would think the death of 75,000 cows by upwards of five feet of snow might get some national attention, but as one blogger observed, it has taken some time for the news of the precipitation massacre to reach outside of local media.

“I searched the national news for more information. Nothing. Not a single report on any of major news sources that I found. Not CNN, not the NY Times, not MSNBC,” Dawn Wink wrote Tuesday. “I thought, ‘Well, it is early and the state remains without power and encased in snow, perhaps tomorrow.’ So I checked again the next day. Nothing. It has now been four days and no national news coverage.”

Wink dubbed it “The Blizzard that Never Was.”

"Illinoisans with a felony on their records will no longer be asked about their criminal past when they apply for state jobs."

The Governor of Illinois has banned the felony box on State of Illinois employment applications. Former Illinois governors and other convicted felons may now reach the interview stage for a state job with greater ease.

This will give those who performed well making license plates a chance to assume a higher position of public trust and responsibility again.

State Rep. LaShawn K. Ford (D-Chicago) has nothing but praise for the Governor of Illinois new don't ask, don't tell policy on felonies. It may come in handy should federal bank charges against the State Rep. Ford result in his conviction.

City Primary - Down to 6

The primary election results for Burlington council:

Tim Scott 728 votes

Becky Shockley 576 votes

Jim Davidson 535 votes

Bob Fleming 457 votes

Chris Reed 378 votes

Mike Campbell 363 votes

For those seeking emblematic proof of this city's numbskull voters need look no further than Tim Scott. First he was for the railroad lawsuit after 6 months of inaction trying to devise a plan to save the jobs at the Shops, then he was for Eminent Domain Mall, never a dissenting vote for Bruce Slagle or Doug Worden's outrageous pay raises, never a dissenting vote for Scott Power's unproven legal invoices, never a question about the city's hidden financial disaster and never open to ideas other than his own.

Tim Scott is just a big, old fashioned rubber stamp for business as usual. The taxpayers need their rubbers but not rubber stampers.

Send Scott, Dudley Davidson and Bob Fleming a clear message, no more red ink.

No Wonder Obama is Scared of Cruz

Obama has no liking for Cruz, the least reason of which is because Cruz is Republican.

Here are a few other factors:

Cruz is academically superior. Cruz graduated cum laude from Princeton. Not the case for Obama. Cruz graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. Not so for Obama. Cruz's mental prowess has been recognized by Allan Dershowitz (who by all accounts is a bigger liberal than Obama) who said that Cruz is one of the most brilliant legal minds that he has ever seen. His actual quote was that "Cruz was off-the-charts brilliant."

Not so Obama. Cruz clerked for the Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court, Justice William Rehnquist, one of the most coveted positions for any young lawyer right out of law school. Not so Obama. The liberal tin horns in Washington along with the liberal media try to tout Cruz as some kind of nut.

Perhaps Obama and the other libs don't like him because he worked on the Florida lawsuit for George W. Bush against Gore. Perhaps it is because Cruz is a Baptist. Perhaps it is because Cruz's wife worked for Condoleezza Rice in the White House and also as one of those horrible investment bankers in New York. Perhaps it's because Cruz ran his Senate campaign as a Republican and still garnered 40% of the Hispanic vote in Texas. Perhaps it’s because Cruz is against same-sex "marriage."

For whatever reason, Obama seems jealous of Cruz's legal successes. What has Obama done in the legal profession? Community organization in one of the most God forsaken cities in the world. Obama was not a professor at the University of Chicago as many of his supporters dishonestly tout, but was a "guest lecturer," an enormous difference.

Ted Cruz is a Texas Senator. His Dad may have just established himself as one more reason for Obama to dislike Texas. This brief video of Cruz's father is amazing-- it is a must watch. Indeed, every true American should have an opportunity to watch this. Please take the time to watch this and to pass it on.

Our City At Work

The Bluff Road project is now going on the ninth week with no explanation to local business and towns people of a completion date.

Bluff Road was forecast to be closed for 6-8 weeks, 9 weeks ago! Still the road is not open and the project is rumored not to be complete for another 4 to 6 weeks. The city officials are nowhere to be found and not taking calls.

The closure of the major throughway came with one day notice published in the Sunday August 4 edition of the Advertiser. No explanation of what was to be done or why. Most notable no coordination or contact was made prior to the roads shutdown with the businesses directly affected.

Traffic has been rerouted through town with Central Street acting as the detour for heavy trucks. This detour was subsequently closed by a State IDOT project for Central street overpass maintenance work calling for a detour of the City's detour. Seemingly the city didn't bother to coordinate their project with state project either.

Sadly enough all this construction is happening in harvest season in Iowa, a major pro-ag state. The Bluff road project ran into the harvest season about the fifth week of the closure.

Beyond heavy local traffic Bluff Road see's hundreds of trucks travel the route every work day to Case Construction, ADM, Burlington Junction RR, Burlington River Terminal, Burlington Loading, Access Energy (hazmat loads), Flint Cliffs Mfg, Diamond Vogel (hazmat loads) Mendenhall Oil (hazmat loads) and LaMont LTD., then add significantly more traffic due to harvest.

All these trucks, some filled with hazardous material have been rerouted through our neighborhoods and school zones without much of a care, save for the city showing up with 10 men to fix one fire hydrant taken out by a truck navigating the tight turns of the detour. I wonder how Police, fire and safety vehicles are taking to the delay and confusion of the route closure?

Major employers of this area are losing business by the day. We know this city cannot balance its budget without endless raises in taxes. And the bang we get for those bucks, besides large amounts of waste, is now the City cannot reasonably plan projects and keep the people informed on their progress.

This is not acceptable.

Presidential Failures

This president currently in the White House has so many indiscretions and disasters, all of which are hidden by the main stream press and news networks, most Americans haven’t a clue just how ineffective this Obama guy really is.

·What happened to Snowden and how could he have run off with secret information?

·Why won’t Obama negotiate with Republicans, could it be his lack of knowing how government works?

·Syria, where Putin upended him very easily prompting Time Magazine to remove Obama’s picture and substitute a football player on its American cover. The same issue for the rest of the world had Obama’s picture on the cover.

·The IRS scandal where the administration has done everything it could to hide the crime from the public and the press.

·Constantly spying on American citizens through many illegal methods banned by the Constitution.

·Has done little to nothing to recover our economy after about five years on the job.

·Obama voted no on raising the debt limit as a Senator but now he wants to raise it and shove it down the throat of the American people. Why did he change his mind on raising the debt limit when he was dead set against such a move previously?

Then we have The Affordable Care Act that was an entirely democrat bill that will eventually fall flat on its own once the people find out they’ve been duped by Obama and the democrats into a potential fraud generating failure of a bill.

In California the exchanges are being run by Obama’s rogue political organizations such as Acorn, Planned Parenthood and SEIU all of which are involved in numerous scandals and indicate the involvement of untrustworthy people having access to the American people’s most private information. It would appear that those that change bedding are also capable of knowing your most secret personal data as well thanks to the government.

Dean - You Can't Handle The Truth!

“It is not my fear that newspapers will die,” he ( Dean Baquet, Pulitzer Prize winner and managing editor of The New York Times) said. “My only fear is that the craft of witnessing and reporting on the truth will die.”

You and others have commented on the content and quality decline of Iowa's Oldest News on Paper. Still, it lingers.

Mr. Baquet is onto something. Does the New York Times pay to read The Burlington Ad Vertiser online?

Moscow Central Has No Money

"FORTUNE -- There's another budget crisis in Washington, and it's unfolding inside the Democratic party. The Democratic National Committee remains so deeply in the hole from spending in the last election that it is struggling to pay its own vendors."

The home office of our socialist local single political party can not pay its bills. It comes as no surprise the City of Burlington is in the same boat.

Loebsack & Braley M. I. A.

"CORALVILLE COURIER EDITOR'S NOTE: A sincere thank you to Rep. Steve King, a Republican who helped out the Veterans. Where was Rep. Dave Loebsack? Nowhere to be seen. Where was Rep. Bruce Braley? Nowhere to be seen. That Veterans, who put their lives on the line, shed blood for this country, get barricaded from a memorial put up in their honor is nonsense."

K. O. should be applied to the political careers of our Nutty Professor Congressman and wannabe Tom Harkin II next November.

Time for a regime change.

Loonsack and Braley were too busy trying to find a way to rewrite their talking points by restructuring sentences.

Coping in Burlington

I was sitting on the plane back to Burlington when a guy took the seat beside me. The guy was an emotional wreck, pale, hands shaking, moaning in fear.

"What's the matter?" I asked.

"I've been transferred to Burlington - there are crazy people there. They've got lots of shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, poor public schools and the highest crime rate in the state."

I replied, "I've lived in Burlington all my life. It's not as bad as the media says. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business, and enroll your kids in a nice private school. It's as safe a place as anywhere in the world."

The guy relaxed and stopped shaking and said, "Oh, thank you. I've been worried to death. But if you live there and say it's OK, I'll take your word for it. What do you do for a living?"

"I'm a tail gunner on the Budweiser truck."

The Beauty of Burlington the Boring

Looking back, things are not as exciting as they used to be. Looking back, this year's city elections are a yawn. It was not that long ago our local government was exciting.

We sued a Fortune 500 company. We sued a Fortune 500 company predicated on a 150-year-old document. We would please local union thugs and get rich in the process. We won an expensive, "Without merit," legal bill and nothing more.

We had a Drunk Mayor. We had a Drunk Mayor drive his car back from Gulfport on election eve. We had a Drunk Mayor found asleep in the driver's seat at a parking lot.

We had a Drunk Mayor who should have been arrest for an O. M. V. U. I. We had a Drunk Mayor who was allowed to call home for a ride. We had Drunk Mayor who if he had been arrested faced prison time for repeat drunk driving offenses.

We had a City Manager. We had a City Manager who would tell city employees for whom they should vote in city elections. We had a City Manager who issued these voting instructions to city employees on the clock.

We had a City Manager who did more than manage. We had a City Manager who played golf with city council members. We had a majority of duffers, drunks and dullards on the city council that voted as the City Manager instructed on the links and the 19th hole.

We had a City Manager and Chamber Commerce who imagined themselves developer entrepreneurs. We still have a State Senator who enabled them to legally force people from their homes in pursuit of their scheme. We are still hemorrhaging huge amounts of our taxes on an Empty Lot Manor Mall at Agency and Roosevelt.

These are just a few highlights from those exciting times when our city had money and a line of good credit. Some who made Burlington exciting have been run out of town. Nearly all remaining no longer hold positions of power.

Those days are gone.

We now are broke. Our credit rating is ailing
. We said no to a utility tax for more of the exciting times. No new municipal stupidities are being implemented, let alone proposed. Our current state of public affairs is boring.

Boredom can be a thing of beauty.

IRS and Obamacare

IRS loses $67 million out of billion-dollar ObamaCare slush fund

It didn’t take the IRS long to mess up its Obamacare slush fund by being unable to account for $67 million of the $1 billion they were given.

Seems we’ll probably need all 16,000 new IRS Obamacare lawyers recently hired to spy on the citizens enrolled in Obamacare to keep an eye on the IRS and the administration itself since it can’t manage to do much without constant scandals or stealing of taxpayer money.

Would seem no person or department in the Obama administration can be trusted to be honest or legitimate about anything paid for by the taxpayers but they’ll sure take the money and stuff their pockets doing nothing to earn it.

Iowa's Worthless Radon Law - Self-Feeding Tom Courtney's Mobsters

Here’s one of the dumbest laws ever for Iowan’s where radon is number one in the country. How can we have fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in the home but not a radon detector?

Iowa Department of Public Health Rules, Chapters 43 (136B), state it is illegal for you to test for radon. This makes no sense, as Iowa has the highest levels of radon that any other state. The only way to test your home is to pay somebody "certified by the Department of Health". In other words you have to pay thousands to some union guy, who bought out the state legislature, to do the test, when in any other state you could buy a kit for a few dollars and do it yourself just like the rest of the country does. Is Iowa crazy??? Is this what Obama wants for the rest of the country?

This is just another case where the state sold out to special interest to maintain their votes which smells of democrats all the way to the bank.

To clarify to all you Obama lovers out there, I tried to order a radon detector kit online, and was told that they cannot be sold in Iowa because of this law. It is illegal for a homeowner in Iowa to buy and use a radon detector kit, the EXACT same kit the fat union guy that charges thousands to do the same thing.

Update, yes, the exemption is in the law, but then why do all the manufacturers say it is illegal to sell online to citizens in Iowa. I can only gather that the Iowa Dept of Health has vigorously enforced this to the point that selling online is a risk no retailer wants to take, not even Amazon. So the Unions win, Obama wins, socialists win, and we, the 99% lose.

This is, word-for-word, from Amazon's website:
Not for sale to residents of the State of Iowa or for shipment to Iowa residents per Iowa Department of Public Health Rules, Chapters 43 (136B). Please contact the Iowa Department of Public Health at (515) 281-7689 for further information.

Maybe all Iowa citizens should call the number constantly until this ignorant law is removed from the books.

I’ll just go to Illinois and have a friend order me one and Iowa can shove it where the Sun doesn’t shine with their special interest protection laws.
